Introduction: The
event will open with a screening of Mohara Yuji's documentary A Week with
Kiarostami, filmed on the set of The Wind Will Carry Us. A
photographic diary, the film plunges us into the beating heart of a shoot whose
story plays out to the rhythm of the relationships between actors and local
people.Using this documentary as a starting-point, Abbas Kiarostami and
Jean-Michel Frodon, editor of Les Cahiers du Cinéma, will then discuss
the director's approach to his film shoots, and the direction his cinema has
taken since The Wind Will Carry Us, with particular emphasis on the
relationship of his films to other art forms. The director's first short film
Bread and Alley and an episode of one of his latest project
Five, will be screened to show the range and development of
Kiarostami's cinema, and its formal affinities with the visual
arts.
