Tehran, Aug 1, IRNA-President Mohammad Khatami on Sunday evening stressed the backward interpretations of Islam have been fading away in the contemporary world.
He made the remark in a ceremony dubbed "Farewell to the President, Hello to Khatami" held at the Interior Ministry Hall.
Representatives of social and political groups as well as outstanding cultural and scientific figures were present in the ceremony.
Pointing out that those who advocated a violent interpretation of Islam presented themselves to the society in even more violent manners after the Khordad-2 presidential elections, he expressed confidence that such attitudes are extremely isolated in the Iranian society today.
Two different interpretations of Islam confronted each other during the past years, he said, adding that the late Founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini made the most severe criticisms of those who advocated backward interpretations of Islam.
Khatami stressed that during his tenure he had been trying to defend freedom from the viewpoint of religion and also to pave the way for dialogue between the Iranian society and the world.
During the past eight years, he said, all attempts were focused on assuring the public that people's votes are the only determining criteria and that power gains its legitimacy from people's votes.
Referring to his administration's achievements in different fields, he noted that a stronger job security has been created for artists while clear rules and boundaries have been established for censorship.
The first fully Iranian-made car, completely designed and manufactured by Iranian experts, has been manufactured, he said.
Iranian experts managed to gain self-sufficiency in constructing dams and silos and import of wheat to the country has been stopped.
As for Iran's image at the international arena, Khatami said attitudes towards Iran changed during the past eight years and as a result many threats posed to the country were eliminated.
The outgoing president further stressed that the reformist movement of the Iranian nation to gain independence, freedom and progress based on religion, justice and freedom-seeking spirit will continue in the future as well.
