Iran: President Khatami's second term in office ends today

Tehran, Aug 2, IRNA-Mohammad Khatami's tenure as Iran's president will end today, Tuesday August 2, 2005. Khatami attended the Majlis session on Tuesday to outline the performance of his cabinet in the last year of the Third Development Plan.

Mahmood Ahmadinejad will take office as the new president as of Wednesday, August 3, 2005 after he is confirmed by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during a ceremony tomorrow.

Khatami became Iran's president in May 17, 1997 in a landslide victory in elections by gaining 20,138,784 votes.

He collected 69 percent of the total votes cast during the polls. He again gained 21,659,053 votes in the 8th presidential elections on June 23, 2002 to start his second term in office as the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This time, 79.92 percent of eligible Iranian voters cast votes in his favor.
