Tehran, Aug 7, IRNA-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday called for expansion of Tehran-Damascus relations in all areas.
President al-Assad arrived in Tehran on Sunday for a two-day visit. During his stay in Tehran, al-Assad is scheduled to hold talks with high-ranking Iranian officials on issues of mutual interests.
Speaking in a joint press conference, Ahmadinejad said that he was pleased to meet one of friends of Iranian nation President al-Assad who is the youngest and most intelligent leader of the Arab and Muslim world.
"Iran-Syria relations are deep, extensive and sustainable in all fields so that we feel no distance between the two nations," he said.
President al-Assad and Syrian nation are on the vanguard of defending the Islamic Ummah, Ahmadinejad said.
"Common threats to Iran and Syria require joint cooperation from the two countries more than ever," he said.
"Cooperation between Iran and Syria would be effective in the region and entire Muslim World and there is no limitation in this respect," Ahmadinejad said.
Iranian president said that Iran sees Syrian problems as its own and the Syrian brethren have the same belief.
Iran-Syria relations are very important so that the enemies do what they can to damage them, he said adding that expansion of relations and planning to that effect would save the region and Muslim World from any aggression.
Ahmadinejad said that exchange of visits of officials from two countries are effective and President al-Assad's visit to Iran opened a new chapter for developing relations.
President al-Assad offered felicitations to President Ahmadinejad on winning national trust of Iranians and said that his visit is taking place in framework of diplomatic shuttle between Iran and Syria.
The Syrian president said that he would discuss regional and international issues and situation in Iraq with his Iranian counterpart.
He said that he would hold consultations with Iranian president on international campaign against terrorism and situation in the Middle East.
Syrian president said that peace and stability in the region are important for Iran and Syria and his negotiations with Iranian officials aim to find practical ways to attain better situation.
"Our national interests and principles are not separate from that of the other regional states. We should reach a common view as two states of the region which serves interest of all the other neighboring states," President al-Assad said.
"We will discuss bilateral relations as well." The two president started negotiations after the press conference.
