Sanandaj, Aug 11, IRNA-Police Chief Brigadier General Ismail Ahmadi Moqaddam said the situation in Kurdish-populated areas is completely normal.
In an interview with reporters at Sanandaj airport on Thursday, the police chief said, "The recent events in Kurdistan were not widespread and the inhabitants of the region did not get involved in them."
He added that the police force in cooperation with basij (volunteer) and security forces dealt with the problem with patience and tolerance and with the least expense.
He said that police chasing a notorious man in Mahabad were forced to open fire on him for self defense, but some groups are pretending that the criminal had been a political activist.
Concerning the number of arrested people, he said, "Most of them have been freed except those who were among organizers of the unrest."
The police chief also refuted as baseless claims raised by some foreign media that two persons had been shot dead in Saqqez during shooting from helicopters.
He said that the lack of correct information was one of the reasons for recent unrest in Kurdish-populated areas.
