Tehran, Aug 12, IRNA-Some 100 cars were burned in an inferno caused by fuel spill from a tanker in southern Tehran early Friday, a Fire Department official told IRNA here Friday.
Hamid Arabzadeh added some 7,000 liters of gasoline spilled into the gutters from a tanker feeding a gas station in Khavaran Street, near Khorassan Square. He said the big fire likely broke out when a passerby flipped his lit cigarette butt into one of the nearby gutters.
The fire took place one km off the gas station at 06:00 hours local time (0130 GMT), quickly spreading to four main streets of Tayyeb, 17 Shahrivar, Shahram, and Darbandi, Arabzadeh said.
He added the inferno claimed no lives, but some 100 cars and facade of two shops were burnt.
According to the latest reports the fire was successfully extinguished by a host of firefighters, who rushed to the scene from six stations.
