Quakes hit northern, northeastern Iran

Tehran, Aug 26, IRNA-Two earthquakes measuring 4.5 and 3.6 on Richter scale jolted the town of Aq-Qala and the Dasht-e Kavir region in the northern and northeastern provinces of Golestan and Semnan Friday morning and Thursday night respectively.

According to the seismological base of the Geophysics Institute affiliated to the Tehran University, the 4.5 Richter scale quake occurred at 06:51 hours local time (0221 GMT).

The report added the tremor was registered in an area located in 37.27 degrees longitude and 54.41 degrees latitude.

The minor 3.6 Richter scale earthquake in Dasht-e Kavir occurred at 22:56 hours local time (1826 GMT).

It was registered in an area located in 53.26 degrees longitude and 34.47 degrees latitude.

No reports have yet been available on possible damage to property.

Quakes of varying magnitudes are of usual occurrence in Iran, which lies on one of the world's most active seismic fault lines.
