Iran's Mobarakeh steel complex exports 360,000 tons of steel products

Isfahan, Aug 29, IRNA-A Mobarakeh Steel Complex official said here Monday that the company has exported 360,000 tons of steel products in the first four months of the current Iranian year (started March 20).

Company's Director of Marketing and Sales Mehdi Taj told reporters that the steel was exported to France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, China India, and several countries in the Middle East.

The company's plans call for exports of one million tons by the end of the year, Taj said adding that "over 250,000 tons will be exported in the next three months."

He said that the export of steel sheets are the primary goal of the firm in achieving its exports objectives.

Taj added that the successful presence of company's steel sheets in Europe is indicative of the highly advanced standards in the sector.

He said the exports of between 25 and 28 percent of final products is the objective of the company. The figure can be achieved in tandem with increasing production, Taj added.

"Exports aim to garner foreign exchange for various development projects," he further added.

In this year final products were exported, whereas last year some half-finished products were also sent abroad, he underlined.

Taj added the complex has the capability of increasing its production up to one million tons annually.

Taj said with production of galvanized steel sheets, their imports have dropped by 50 percent. He also put the amount of imports at 150,000 tons annually.

With the completion of the production line over 70,000 tons of galvanized steel sheets have been offered to the markets.

He also reckoned that over dlrs 120 million yearly will be the savings due to domestic production.

A member of Steel Producers Association said here in July that the steel sector has focused on two-pronged priorities of expansion of steel production and privatization.

Mohsen Torabi said that Iran has huge iron ore reserves, ample gas reserves and significant skilled manpower which are all factors underpinning the higher steel production.

He said the private sector steel production capacity is 10 million tons annually.

The sharp increase in world steel prices provides a good opportunity for Iran to increase its exports of the product. The exports of Iranian steel to Europe has increased due to the high demand for steel in European countries.

The increase in exports of steel would not cause any shortage in domestic supply, the industry official reiterated.
