CASMII Resolution against Attacks on Iran and Syria Unanimously Adopted by London International Peace Conference

Press Release by CASMII, 13 December 2005

A resolution calling on “the anti-war movement in all countries to oppose any attack on Iran or Syria” was unanimously adopted by the International Peace Conference held in London on Saturday 10th December 2005. This resolution, which for the first time raises threats against Iran as a core focus of the anti-war movement, was the result of lobbying by the newly founded Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran (CASMII), Seven delegates from CASMII took part in the conference. They joined well over twelve hundred delegates from around the world including Iraq and the US, mainland Europe, Canada and Philippines. Speakers included Tony Benn, Bruce Kent (CND), Jeremy Corbin (MP), all of whom specifically addressed the growing threat of attack against Iran.

In a well organized effort, CASMII petitioned delegates and conference organizers to add the resolution to the Conference Statement. The resolution was discussed with a number of representatives of key participating organizations, resulting in agreement to its inclusion by the conference organizers. The Conference Statement, including this additional resolution opposing any attack on Iran or Syria, was approved unanimously by conference participants. The complete text of the Conference Statement, together with further details of the event, are available at , site of the conference's organizers, the London-based Stop the War Coalition. CASMII delegates also handed out a leaflet (see News and Analysis) which reached the great majority of conference participants. CASMII's major successful intervention at the conference in calling on the international anti-war movement to oppose any attack on Iran and Syria will be a solid basis for building an effective international campaign in the weeks and months ahead to stop a new, even more disastrous war in the Middle East.
