Brussels, Dec 22, IRNA-The first World Congress for Freedom of Scientific Research is to take place in Rome from February 16 to 18, 2006.
The meeting, promoted by a group of Italian researchers and university professors, will involve scientists and decision-makers in a debate to address issues related to science, society, politics, law, ethics of scientific research, technology and economy.
The congress is aimed to discuss emerging threats against research and to indicate possible initiatives to counter them, according to a press release issued by the organizers and received by IRNA in Brussels.
The event is being organized by the Luca Coscioni Association along with prominent Italian scientists from different disciplines.
Participants include Nobel laureate Zhores Alferov, Prof Michael Gazzaniga (US President's Committee on Bio-ethics), Colin Blakemore (executive director of the UK Medical Research Council) as well as representatives from national and regional governments and legislators from parliaments around the world.
The congress will be open to the public.
