Birjand, Dec 27, IRNA-Officials of Iran's South Khorasan Province and Afghanistan's border Forah Province signed economic, academic, and cultural cooperation agreements on Monday.
Governor General of South Khorasan province said during the ceremony on the occasion of signing the contracts, "Iran has had strong ties with Afghanistan as of very old times and the process of that close bilateral cooperation still goes on."
Seyyed Soulat Mortazavi added, "Shared language, long shared borders, and presence of a noticeable number of Afghan refugees in this province, encouraged us to invite the Governor General of Afghanistan's Forah Province to visit South Khorasan in the framework of the agreements between the two governments.
He said, "during Forah Governor General's three-day visit atop a delegation the provincial officials had satisfactory talks with them, regarding which we have published a number of joint cooperation communiques."
He added, "The joint cooperation communique signed today (Monday) has three appendices on cultural, social, and economic-agricultural cooperation, in addition to an appendix on border cooperation and mutual security issues, all signed by the two governor generals and the concerned heads of the relative commissions."
Mortazavi said, "I hope Iran, and particularly South Khorasan Province would be able to play a decisive role in reconstruction of Afghanistan."
Elaborating on the details of bilateral cooperation he said, "A part of the agreements are reached between the Iranian and Afghan governments after being proposed by the Joint Commission for Reconstruction of Afghanistan, among which we can refer to the beginning of the executive works at the building of a recreational-technical training center in Forah Province, for which some 10 billion rials is allocated."
Governor General of Afghanistan's Forah Province arrived in Birjand on Saturday atop a delegation to survey the grounds for joint cooperation of the two chambers of commerce of Forah and South Khorasan.
The high ranking Afghan delegation during its three-day visit of Iran's South Khorasan Province while meeting provincial officials, visited the province's universities, recreational centers, schools, factories, and landscapes.
Afghanistan's Forah Province with its nine townships and 540,000 population shares 220 kilometers of borders with Islamic Republic of Iran's South Khorasan Province.
Iran's South Khorasan Province has 420 kilometers of shared borders with Afghanistan's Forah, Herat and Nimroze provinces.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has 940 kilometers of shared borders with Afghanistan.
