Iran: Quakes hit towns in Khuzestan and Kerman provinces

Tehran, Dec 30, IRNA-Two separate mild earthquakes jolted the towns of Lali and Kahnouj respectively in the southwestern province of Khuzestan and southeastern province of Kerman early Friday and Thursday evening.

The Seismological base of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University recorded an earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale in the suburbs of Lali town in Khuzestan province.

The tremor occurred at 3:30 hours local time on Friday morning (2400 GMT) in an area located in 32.8 degree latitude and 49.12 degree longitude, the center said.

No report was immediately available on possible casualty or damage to property caused by the quake.

Meanwhile, another report by the center said that a 2.5-magnitude tremble hit the outskirts of Kahnouj town in southeastern province of Kerman on Thursday evening.

The center registered the tremor at 19:34 hours local time (1604 GMT) in an area near Kahnouj that was hit by an earlier earthquake on Thursday morning.

The first quake had jolted Kahnouj at 10:32 hours local time (0702 GMT) in an area measuring 55.17 degrees in longitude and 28.12 degrees in latitude.

Quakes of varying magnitudes often occur in Iran, which is situated on some of the world's most active seismic faultlines.
