Iran says Caspian Sea littoral states summit postponed

Moscow, Feb 1, IRNA -- The meeting of the heads of state of the Caspian Sea littoral states has been postponed to a later date, said Iran's Ambassador to Russia Gholam-Reza Shafei on Tuesday.

The Caspian Sea summit meet was postponed to another date after one of littoral states announced it could not take part in the meeting, Shafei told a press conference. He did not disclose the name of the said country.

Tehran will host the meeting after Iran's presidential elections in next June, he noted.

The last ministerial meeting of the five Caspian Sea littoral states was held in Moscow aimed at resolving issues affecting the Caspian Sea and its resources.

The sea straddles Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Iran.

Shafei also referred to Iran-Russia cooperation in Central Asia, Caucasus and the Caspian Sea, saying the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Tehran is on the agenda of the Russian government though the date for the visit has yet to be fixed.

He noted that Iran-Russia Parliamentary Friendship Group is to hold a meeting soon and Iran's Parliament Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad Adel is likely to visit Russia soon.

Speaking on the occasion of the 26th triumph anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the Iranian diplomat termed the combination of religion and politics as the main achievement of the revolution in the country.
