Official: Iran can turn into regional hub for medical tourism

Dubai, Feb 13, IRNA -- An Iranian official in charge of tourism has said Iran can become a hub of medical tourism in the region in future.

Speaking to IRNA on the sidelines of a health exhibition here on Sunday, an advisor at Iran's Cultural and Tourism Heritage Organization Abdol-Hussein Nasseri said Iran has necessary medical equipment and instruments as well as extensive tourism facilities, with the potential to serve as a center in the region for treating tourists.

Nasseri said medical tourism industry can absorb a large number of the Arab and non-Arab visitors to Iran and the tourists would be able to visit the country's tourist sites, while undergoing medical treatment.

Emphasizing the religious and geographical commonalties of Iran and Arab states of the region as well as the Central Asian republics, Nasseri said many tourists from the countries prefer to undergo medical treatment in a country like Iran.

He said Iranian government can prepare grounds for medical treatment of tourists, thus paving the way for promotion of tourism.

Nasseri added that Iranian embassies in regional states would in near future offer special insurance services for medical tourists based on international standards.

He said all the tourists would prior to their visit to Iran be informed of the details of the visit, period of treatment and the suggested centers for undergoing medical treatment.

He added that a number of tourist institutions had already started propagating such tourism and drawing some tourists.

The official said Iran offers such medical tourism services as the eye surgery, orthopedic treatment, dentistry operations, cardiovascular, aesthetic and pregnancy care systems.

Some regional states have been competing with Iran in medical tourism but they cannot keep pace with high standards of Iran's medicare facilities, he concluded.
