TEHRAN, Jan. 3 -- Four Iranian music concerts are to be performed at the Persian Gulf Hall of the Niavaran Cultural Center in Tehran from January 4 to 7. The first program will be a duet of tar virtuoso Payam Jahanmani and tonbak player Behzad Mirza'i, which is to be performed on January 4 and 5.
Jahanmani also performed at the venue last year. He is a student of Hossein Alizadeh, one of the masters of Iranian classical music.
The Niavaran Cultural Center will also host piano recitals by Safa Kateb Purrashidi on January 6 and 7. He is slated to perform some fantasias he has composed in the Iranian and Azeri musical styles.
He plans to play the fantasias in Esfahan, Mahur, Dashti, and Homayun dastgahs (Iranain melodic modes). Purrashidi also intends to perform the piece "O Iran" to commemorate its composer, Ruhollah Khaleqi (1901-1960). Renowned Iranian vocalist Gholamhossein Banan sang the most popular version of the song.
The instructional book Khaleqi wrote on playing the violin and the Iranian musical instruments tar and setar is still taught at the Iranian National Academy of Music, which he once headed.
