In the ceremony, President Khatami expressed his gratitude for the hospitality of the Nigerian government and nation, expressing hope that his visit could prepare the ground for further expansion of Tehran-Abuja relations.
The presidents of the two countries reviewed the guard of honour and the national anthems of Iran and Nigeria were also played.
President Khatami is to head for Dakar, capital of Senegal.
During his stay in Nigeria, Khatami and Obasanjo signed a memorandum of understanding on friendship and cooperation.
President Khatami left Tehran for Abuja Tuesday morning on the first leg of his seven-nation African tour which will also take him to Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leon, Benin, Zimbabwe and Uganda.
The Iranian ministers of foreign affairs, industries and mines, commerce and cooperatives are accompanying the president.
