School fire kills 13 students in southwestern Iran

Shahr-e Kord, Chahar Mahal Bakhtiari prov, Jan 13, IRNA -- Thirteen students in a classroom died Thursday morning in Safilan village, in this southwestern province, when a heater caught fire, said a provincial official.

In the disaster which took place at an elementary school, seven girls and six boys lost their lives, the governor of the town of Lordegan, Aqajan Alijani added.

The teacher of the classroom was seriously injured while trying to extinguish the fire, he added. The teacher has been transferred to a hospital in Isfahan in central Iran.

President Khatami condoles with families of victims

Dakar, Jan 14, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami, currently in this Senegalese capital, sent a message of condolence Thursday evening for families of the students who lost their lives earlier in the day in school fire in southwestern Iran.

Expressing his "deep regret and sorrow" over the disaster of burning alive to death of 13 elementary school students in Safilan village of the Chahar Mahal Bakhtiari province, the president hoped that the families could "patiently and with the help of the God, almighty, tolerate the grief of losing their beloved children."

He also urged Chahar Mahal Bakhtiari's governor general to visit, on his behalf, the injured of the disaster in the hospital and personally watch over the trend of their treatment.

President Khatami also called on the Health Ministry to make necessary arrangements for the treatment of the survivors.
