SAN FRANCISCO, CA - January 17th, 2005 - Bay Area Iranian-American Democrats (BAIAD) today announced it will be hosting an educational forum with Dr. Ivan Eland, a national security expert, and Dr. Ali Nayeri, an MIT physicist, on Iran's Nuclear Issue entitled "Peering through the Fog of Nuclear Proliferation". The forum will be held on Sunday, January 23rd at Faz restaurant in Sunnyvale, California beginning at 5:00 PM.
"With complex issues such as this, the absence of sufficient information leads people to form opinions and positions that are more emotional than objective," said BAIAD President Mehrdad Moayedzadeh. He added: "We don't know who is the Iranian version of Ahmed Chalabi giving advice to the current administration about Iran. But the better informed our public becomes, the less likely we'll end up with an Iranian version of the horrific and impossible situation in Iraq."
The forum will include presentations by two prominent scholars. Dr. Ivan Eland has a PhD in National Security Policy from George Washington University. He has been Director of Defense Policy Studies at the Cato Institute and Principal Defense Analyst at the Congressional Budget Office. His latest book is entitled: "The Empire Has No Clothes". Dr. Ali Nayeri has a PhD in Theoretical Physics from MIT and is currently a Research Affiliate at MIT as well as a Visiting Professor at the University of Florida. In addition to covering the scientific aspect of this issue, Dr. Nayeri will also speak to historical aspect of the Islamic Republic's interest in nuclear technology. Conducted in two segments, the speakers' presentations will be followed by a question and answer session. The event is set for the evening of Sunday, January 23rd, at Faz restaurant, located at 1108 N. Mathilda Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA 94089. The forum will be in English and will run from 5:00-7:30 p.m. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. This meeting is open to public with admission free for BAIAD members, $10 for non-members.
