Iranian President officially greets Azeri counterpart

Tehran, Jan 24, IRNA -- President Mohammad Khatami accorded his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev an official welcome at Sa'dabad Cultural Complex in Tehran on Monday.

The two presidents accompanied by senior officials of Iran and Azerbaijan reviewed a guard of honor and listened to the two countries' national anthems being played.

Azeri President Ilham Aliyev arrived in Tehran for an official three-day visit.

Minister of Cooperatives Ali Sufi welcomed Aliyev at Mehrabad International Airport.

Aliyev's visit is taking place at the invitation of President Mohammad Khatami and in response to the Iranian president's visit to Azerbaijan in August 2004.

Azerbaijan's parliament speaker and ministers of foreign affairs, industries, education, health and development are accompanying Aliyev in this visit.

President Aliyev is scheduled to hold talks with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Khatami, and other senior officials.

During President Aliyev's visit, some important decisions will be taken with an aim of expanding mutual relations, Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi told reporters before the ceremony at Sa'adabad Cultural Complex.

President Aliyev is to pay tribute to the late lmam Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Revolution, at his mausoleum.

He is also scheduled to inspect Iran's biggest auto-making factory, Iran Khodro.

Iran and Azerbaijan during President Aliyev's visit will sign several documents for expansion of bilateral cooperation in the economic, cultural, and health fields as well as border security.

During President Khatami's visit to Baku in 2004, Iran and Azerbaijan inked 10 documents for expansion of political, security, economic and cultural relations.
