Iran's parliament speaker meets Belgian counterpart

Brussels, July 2, IRNA-Visiting Speaker of the Iranian Majlis (Parliament) Gholam Ali Haddad Adel met his Belgian counterpart Hermann de Croo in Brussels on Friday and discussed cooperation of the two parliaments.

Speaking to reporters at the end of the meeting, Hadad Adel said that his visit to Belgium took place in response to an invitation by de Croo during his visit to Tehran in December 2001.

His visit to Belgium is the first visit of an Iranian Majlis speaker since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.

Hadad Adel said that he had "good and constructive talks' with de Croo.

He also stressed on Tehran's readiness to widen its parliamentary cooperation with the Belgian parliament and reiterated Iran's important role in maintaining regional peace and stability.

Later in the day, the Iranian Majlis speaker met Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht and exchanged views on Tehran-Brussels ties as well as EU-Iran relations.

"It is important to continue the EU-Iran dialogue in order to have a clear picture from both sides,'' de Gucht told IRNA.

Noting that EU, the world leading economic power, was trying its best to help find a solution for Iran's nuclear issue which would satisfy both sides, De Gucht said that the EU-Iran dialogue will "continue in July." Referring to "rich historical roots" of Iran, the Belgian minister hoped to visit Iran in a near future.

Meanwhile, Hadad Adel also held a meeting with the EU Foreign Policy chief, Javier Solana, and discussed relationship between the Islamic Republic and the 25-member bloc.

Haddad-Adel arrived in Brussels Thursday accompanied by three other deputies and met with Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt later in the day.

He is expected to visit the harbor of the city of Antwerp before returning to Tehran on Saturday.
