Maryam Tabatabie is a young painter with a difference. Like many other young artists, she is working hard and has very great potential. The difference I am talking about is her background. Not because she started to paint since she was 3-4 years old, when she would finish one whole picture book after another; nor the fact that she kept her colored pens and coloring book under her pillow. Not because she went to university and now is taking her masters degree; or that she works hard. She has not been pampered to do her work; she has fought and worked hard to do so.
Maryam lives in a university dormitory. When I sat for a chat with her at her recent exhibition at the Aria gallery, she told me that since she can remember she has been short of money for her painting materials. When I asked her "what is one possible thing that she would like most?" she said "space, a room where I can paint." I learned that the pictures in this exhibition were painted in many different places as she has had to move so many times. Yet we can see that this young determined lady artist who is from Qom is no less determined in her work or brush strokes.
I became interested in her when I saw the picture on her exhibition invitation which to me was strong, hard, determined and full of deep and sincere passion for life and existence, despite its dark background. I was impressed with her zest for living; she told me that she lives for now and make the best of each moment by her positive attitude and good work.
I am sure the future is bright with so many resolved and determined, special, young ladies around. I have a few samples of her work here for you to share and you can draw your own conclusions.
