Press Freedom Society criticizes Iranian judiciary for illegal action against IRNA director

Tehran, July 23, IRNA-Verdict of culpability for IRNA Managing director Abdollah Nasseri is out of place, spokesman for Society Advocating freedom of the press Mashallah Shamsolvaezin said on Saturday.

Shamsolvaezin refuted the court action taking Nasseri responsible for a news item concerning presidential polls.

An IRNA news item had expressed surprise with a Persian daily from conservative camp predicting Ahmadinejad's victory one day ahead of polls.

"Taking a real entity responsible for an item from national media is not legal." Ahmadinejad's election campaign team has the right to lodge complaint against IRNA as a legal entity, but, complaint against director of the national media is not right.

Shamsolvaezin criticized the Judiciary for "illegal action" against Nasseri as contrary to the Constitution.

According to Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, any complaint against the press should be examined by the special court for the press in presence of the jury.

IRNA legal advisor said that the press jury was not present in the court when Nasseri was responding to the question of the judge about the news item.

Nasseri told the judge that IRNA is a national media and the agency observed impartiality in the presidential election.
