Tehran, July 25, IRNA-Judiciary Spokesman Jamal Karimi Rad said in Tehran on Tuesday that there were 132,564 inmates kept in Iranian jails.
Talking to reporters, he said the figure was related to the number of prisoners in the Iranian month of Khordad (May 22-June 21).
He said the figure showed a drop of 2.64 percent compared with the same period last year.
According to the spokesman, the number of prisoners released during the month of Khordad was higher by 3.16 percent than the same period last year.
He also said most of the inmates arriving at Iranian prisons during the first quarter of current Iranian year (started march 21) were convicted on drugs-related charges.
Karimi Rad further noted that 4,707 female inmates together with 5,330 foreign nationals were being held in Iranian prisons.
Pointing out that the number of inmates nationwide stood at 185,000 when Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi was appointed as the Judiciary chief six years ago, he said the decrease in the number was due to the policies adopted during this period to reduce imprisonment verdicts.
