Almaty, June 4, IRNA-Kazakhstan foreign minister said Saturday in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has agreed Iran, India and Pakistan to join the organization as observers.
At the end of foreign ministers meeting of state members of SCO in Astana, the Kazakh FM Kassymozhomart Tokaev informed the reporters about the decision.
He stressed, the decision is an important event in SCO history.
The SCO was founded in 1997 in Shanghai, China, and five countries were among the founders; China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
Uzbekistan joined the organization on June 15, 2001.
The main goals of founding the organization are: confidence building, decreasing border guard forces and strengthening security in the member states.
