At the meeting, fully covered by domestic and foreign reporters, the Croatian president expressed satisfaction with the current visit of his Iranian counterpart to Zagreb and hoped to witness further expansion of cooperation between the two countries.
The Croatian officials are determined to broaden all-out ties especially in the economic area with Iran, Mesic said adding that there are ample economic potentials which should be explored to promote the level of bilateral ties.
The Iranian and Croatian foreign ministers were also present in the meeting.
President Khatami, for his part, expressed satisfaction with his visit to Croatia and expressed the hope that the visit would lead to further promotion of all-out relations between the two sides.
After the private meeting between the two presidents, high ranking Iranian and Croatian delegations held a joint meeting in the presence of the two heads of state.
The two countries are scheduled to sign three memoranda of understanding (MoU) on expansion of cooperation between the two sides radio and television organizations, chambers of commerce and academy of science.
Khatami arrived in Zagreb earlier Monday, on the first leg of his three-nation tour which will also take him to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Venezuela.
The Iranian president is accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs Kamal Kharrazi and and Minister of Road and Transportation Mohammad Rahmati.
During his stay, he is due to visit an Islamic center in Zagreb and deliver a speech at the Croatian Academy of Sciences.
President Khatami will leave Zagreb for Sarajevo on Tuesday afternoon.
