The Second Kaveh Golestan Annual Photojournalism Award

By Syma Sayyah, Tehran

The Second Kaveh Golestan Annual Photojournalism Award was launched last week at a press conference at the Artist's Forum (Khaneh Honarmandan) at Iranshar Avenue in Tehran.

At the press conference, Ms Lili Golestan, the sister of Kaveh Golestan, talked about last year's award and how this year's award competition will be run.  She went on to outline the challenges that the committee had encountered last year and the lessons that they had learned to make this year even better.  She thanked all those who had helped to give this award such an important standing in the photographic community, especially among the young photojournalists whose many wonderful works are presented in the catalogue which is available at bookstores and many well known photographic shops. She added that the committee received permission from the authorities for the catalogue to be published only ten days before the award ceremony, and the booklet was out of the printers the very same day.

She also explained that it is the policy of the awarding committee to invite well-known names in different fields of arts to become jury members and that not all of the jury members were photographers and photojournalists.   Although it is not the only photojournalism award in the country, Kaveh Golestan award has found a great prominence in its related community because of its independence, even though many organizations have been eager to be associated with it.

- A CD containing many of the images from last years competition was prepared which was handed over to the journalists.

- During the press conference Ms Golestan reassured the public that this award will maintain its independence.

- This year again there will be a catalogue comprising the best photographs and photographic essays that take part in the competition.
