Tehran, March 14, IRNA-In a message sent to a university students gathering, President Mohammad Khatami stressed on the significant status of the the Persian Gulf in Iranian culture and history.
The message which was addressed to the students gathering in Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf on Monday reads in parts "I sincerely value the steps taken by the university students who are determined to honor the dignity of the Persian Gulf."
The cultural identity of every nation depends on the sensitivities shown by its youths, the president said adding that the Iranian university students as the pioneers of cultural heritage proved they were capable enough to deal with the fabrication of a fake name for the Persian Gulf.
History has always witnessed that the Iranians with reliance on their identity and national unity and without any prejudice have called for dialogue and understanding.
Official: Emphasis on Persian Gulf's name not contrary to amicable ties with neighbors
Qeshm, March 15, IRNA-Head of the Persian Gulf Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Morteza Rahimian said here Monday, Emphasis on historical name of the Persian Gulf, and defending that stand is not contrary to maintaining amicable ties with other nations."
Speaking on the sideline of a conference currently convened here, Rahimian told IRNA, "The Islamic Republic of Iran defends a name that was chosen for this ancient waterway many centuries ago, and that is the name this gulf has been referred to for thousands of years." The foreign ministry official added, "There are many waterways in the world, a large number of which are named after countries that have longest shores by them, and those countries, too, have always defended those names."
Further emphasizing the historical nature of Persian Gulf's name, he said, "Ever since the 1950s, some shared enemies of the Iranian and Arab nations in the region started calling the vital Persian Gulf some other suspicious names, and the move was obviously aimed at sowing the seeds of enmity among regional nations."
Rahimian reiterated, "Persian Gulf littoral states need to keep alert and not fall prey to the plots hatched by our shared enemies." Referring to the "self-propelled" Monday gathering of the Iranian university students by the navy-blue waters of the Persian Gulf at Qeshm Island, he said, "The young Iranian men and women gathered here today in a symbolic move to prove their determination to safeguard this vital, strategic waterways' always Persian name."
