Tehran, May 7, IRNA-Chairman of the State Expediency Council, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, said in Tehran late Saturday new international, regional and internal circumstances have all put Iran into a "critical situation".
Speaking to the members of Iran Independence Party's Central Council, Rafsanjani underlined the sensitivity of upcoming conditions be well understood.
"We should take a serious step to encounter domestic and international problems," he said, stressing on the national solidarity and public participation in elections.
Rafsanjani described the stance of western countries with regard to Iran use of peaceful nuclear technology as "without flexibility", maintaining "it is not good for us to connive at our people's rights and we should defend using peaceful nuclear technology on behalf of the people."
He further said that success in current atmosphere requires the balance between political forces and understanding of the national interest, rejecting favoritism in the current circumstances.
"Interests of Islamic Revolution, the country and people should be prioritized," he noted.
Responding to the invitation of Iran Independence Party members to his candidacy, the top cleric said he was assessing the situation and hoping to reach an appropriate strategy in the remaining time.
"We should lead the country to prosperity and development by understanding the changes and retaining our religious and national principles through devising new plans," he said.
