Iranian President: Hormuzgan province glowing moon of Persian Gulf

Bandar Abbas, Hormuzgan prov., May 10, IRNA-President Mohammad Khatami said here Tuesday that Hormuzgan is the glowing moon of the Persian Gulf.

Addressing a group of officials in a ceremony, marking inauguration of a 990-megawatt power plant in southern Bandar Abbas port city, Khatami said the warmth of people's affection and love is many times as much the burning temperature of the region.

Referring to Hormuzgan as a gateway to the outside world, Khatami said local people are patrons of Iranian culture and civilization.

Describing Hormuzgan province as the beating heart of Iran's booming economy, Khatami said the share of the province in Iran's economy and development is very high.

Khatami said a 990-megawatt power plant was inaugurated today in the province to meet energy requirements of the province and of the country's industry sector.

Except turbines all other equipment used in the power plant has been made domestically, he said, adding that Iran has become self-sufficient by 80 percent in energy generation.

He congratulated the great entrepreneurs and inventors in various fields who are helping the country tread the path of development. He said the Iranian nation should be proud of having such children whom he described as big assets.

The president said 37,000 megawatts of electricity are presently generated and the figure is expected to reach 39,000 megawatts by the end of the government's tenure.

He said 43 percent of the total power generation, i.e. 17,000 megawatts, are to be produced this year.

He added that however, power consumption rate has exceeded production which indicates a positive trend in the country's economic development as well as rising need of the agriculture and industry sectors for energy.

The president said only 700 villages are deprived of electricity but the number of villages supplied with electricity stands at 13,000.

He called for a change in electricity and energy consumption, which on some occasions exceed world standards. Low price might be the reason for the hike in consumption, he added.

He said optimization of subsidies is one of the key ways of attaining development and administering justice.

Generation of 39,000 megawatts of electricity by Iranian experts is an honor, concluded Khatami.
