Tehran, May 16, IRNA-Azeri Defense Minister Safar Abiyev said in Tehran on Monday, "We have not given any military base to Iran's enemies." The Azeri minister who is heading a high ranking delegates made the remarks after meeting with his Iranian counterpart Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani where the two ministers signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation.
In response to the questions posed by reporters on allocation of military base to Iran's enemies, he said the republic of Azerbaijan is an independent country and have not ceded any military base to Iran's enemies.
On Iran's defense capabilities, he said the country has made very remarkable breakthrough in defense industries and "I have witnessed production of modern and sophisticated weapons during the visit." The Islamic Republic of Iran produces many sophisticated military weapons such as high-tech electronic devices, he said.
On signing defense MoU between the two countries, he said expansion of defense cooperation between Iran and Azerbaijan would lessen regional tension.
The MoU enables Azerbaijan to continue military cooperation with Iran, he said adding that the two countries enjoy all-out cooperation which leads to restoration of peace in the region.
On deployment of NATO forces to protect oil pipelines in Azerbaijan, he denied the charges and said the Azeri forces are involved in restoration of security on such areas.
Iran's defense minister who was present in the news conference, said the MoU will help restore stability, might and security of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The country has been quite successful in both software and hardware industries, he said.
The MoU is to broaden various scope of cooperation in defense, research and training between the two countries and the context of the MoU is not against any third country while has not been inspired by any, Shamkhani said.
Azeri defense minister and his entourage left Tehran Monday morning.
