Tehran, May 17, IRNA-Iranian representative for Caspian Sea affairs Mehdi Safari said on Tuesday that about 75 percent of the accords about the status convention of the Caspian Sea has been agreed in the past 14 meetings of envoys of the Caspian States.
He told IRNA at the end of the 17th Meeting of Special Working Group on Drafting the Caspian Sea Status Convention that some 25 percent of the accords remained to be made on major issues of the Caspian Sea and the neighboring states are working intensively to conclude final accords.
Asked about the agenda of the meeting which wound up Tuesday in Tehran, he said that representatives of the Caspian states studied a formula about dividing the sea-bed and undersea resources of the Caspian Sea adding that representatives of the neighboring states put forward their views about the subject explicitly.
"Drafting status convention is a lengthy process and one should not expect finalization of the accords within a limited number of meetings. The regular meeting of the Caspian States indicated that the five neighboring states are willing to finalize a comprehensive convention about the Caspian Sea," Safari said.
He said that the five states have clinched an accord on the environment of the Caspian Sea and they have decided to put into practice the measures envisaged in the accord to protect environment of the landlocked sea.
Meanwhile, Azeri Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov said that the littoral states of the Caspian Sea are determined to reach unanimity on convention about the Caspian Sea.
Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Rapil Zhoshybayev said that representatives of the Caspian States are working to reach agreement on context of convention about status of the Caspian Sea.
He said that the neighboring countries have clinched accords on several issues and representatives of the five states will follow up negotiations to reach unanimity on the remaining issues.
Russian Foreign Ministry's Special Envoy Aleksander Golovin said, "We have come to Iran in the hope of reaching agreement on the remaining subjects of convention of the Caspian Sea." He said that the parties drafting the convention of the Caspian Sea are close to a unanimity about context of a convention.
Turkmen government's representative on Caspian Sea affairs, Khoshgeldy Babayev described the atmosphere of the 17the meeting of the working group as pleasant and said that the meeting was successful for putting forward views of the five parties explicitly and would serve as a good basis for the next negotiations on the convention of the Caspian Sea.
Golovin of Russia said that the convention will also envisage measures to provide security arrangement for the Caspian Sea and the Caspian States would cooperate in campaign against terrorism, human trafficking and contraband.
Khalafov of Azerbaijan said that Baku has signed defense pact with Tehran and cooperation would extend to security arrangement for the Caspian Sea in the context of convention of the Caspian Sea.
