Brussels, May 23, IRNA-The 25-member European Union on Monday voiced its disappointment over the exclusion of a large number of candidates from the presidential elections in the Islamic Republic to be held on June 17.
"We were disappointed by the announcement of the Guardian Council not to allow many candidates for the elections particularly those who were reformists," Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn told a press conference in Brussels Monday afternoon.
Luxembourg holds the current EU Presidency.
He said EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels today discussed the upcoming elections in Iran.
"The Guardian Council approved only those candidates who represented relatively narrow range of opinion in the country," said Asselborn.
"So they made it impossible for a true democratic choice to be made by the Iranian people in the upcoming elections," he added.
