The University of California, Davis, under the leadership of Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef, has been on a mission to build academic bridges with countries of different cultures. The Chancellor's 2004 visit to University of Tehran, along with a delegation from UC Davis, was the first such high-ranking visit from a major American university to Iran (see UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef: Iran Journal, April 25-May 1, 2004). As Chancellor Vanderhoef stated, "this visit was an effort to convert a boundary into a bridge." The Chancellor will talk about his vision of building bridges at the December 10, 2005 Gala.

The UC Davis Iranian Alumni Association Scholarship Endowment Fund (IAASEF) was established by the Iranian Alumni Association (IAA), a chapter of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, in 1996. The IAA's goal is to raise a minimum of $500,000 to provide financial assistance to UC Davis students of Iranian ancestry. To date, the Iranian-American community has contributed over $125,000 to this fund. Over the past five years, UC Davis has awarded 18 scholarships from the IAASEF to students of Iranian heritage ranging from $500 to $2,000. The UC Davis Financial Aid and Scholarship Office are in charge of the selection process and notification of scholarship recipients.  The proceeds from the Gala will be deposited in the IAASEF.

The IAA, as part of its mission, is proudly committed to help students of Iranian heritage meet the cost of their education, excel in their academic endeavors, and become future ambassadors of our rich Iranian culture. The Iranian-American community should seize this opportunity to assist a forward-looking educational institution such as UC Davis in developing relationship with Iranian educational institutions. Your participation at the 2005 Scholarship Gala and your continued support of the Iranian Alumni Association Endowment Scholarship Fund will help build bridges that will benefit our future generations for years to come.
