Vienna, Nov 16, IRNA-Former president of Iran Mohammad Khatami and Austria's Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel met in Vienna on Tuesday on the sidelines of the conference `Islam in a Pluralistic World'.
In their meeting, the two officials exchanged views on long-term relations between Austria and Iran.
The former Iranian president is in Austria for a three-day official visit. He is also here to participate in the said conference.
Khatami, since his arrival here on Monday, has conferred with Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Antonio Maria Costa.
He has also held meetings with the Presidents of Austria and Afghanistan Heinz Fischer and Hamid Karzai, respectively.
The ongoing three-day conference on Islam opened in Vienna's historic Hofburg Palace on Monday, November 14.
Khatami, speaking at the conference on the subject of Islam's global role, said that it was the duty of "the entire religious community to save the world from atomic bombs and chemical weapons." The conference, hosted by Austria, is attended by some of the most prominent and embattled Muslim leaders including Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
Austria is take over the EU Presidency from the UK in January 2006.
A message from UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, read by UN Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, appealed for the "logic of peace" to overcome all forms of extremism.
