TEHRAN, Nov. 23 (Mehr News Agency) -- A delegation from the European Union is planning to pay a visit to Iran to discuss with Iranian officials their concern about the possible contamination of Iran's pistachios with the toxic substance Aflatoxin B1.
Also, the team of experts is to closely become familiar with the process of pistachio growing and production and inspect the related equipments, Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) reported on Wednesday.
Iran's is expected to produce 150,000 tons of the product whereas, the world markets' demand for the commodity exceeds millions of tons. The country earned some 435 million dollars from pistachio exports in 2003, the figure, however, reached 533 million dollars in 2004.
Farmlands under pistachio cultivation in Iran were about 275,000 hectares in 2003 but the figure increased to 428,000 hectares in 2004, production from the lands however grew from 230,000 tons in 2003 to 182,000 tons last year. Iran's 2003 pistachio exports stood at about 117,000 tons. The figure however increased to 129,000 tons in the previous year.
