Vienna, Oct 4, IRNA-The New Director General of World Trade Organization (WTO) Pascal Lami said in Geneva Monday "My colleagues and I will do our best to facilitate Iran's membership talks to the world trade body."
In a meeting with Iran's permanent representative to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva Mohammad Reza Alborzi, he added that ascension to the WTO comprises bilateral and unilateral talks and his colleagues will render their outmost cooperation to see Iran successfully climb the membership steps to join the WTO.
Alborzi further called on Lami for more support for Iran's bid to the world trade body.
He also briefed Lami on national efforts conducted with cooperation from international organizations including the WTO to prepare the grounds for joining the WTO.
Presently, the preliminary steps have been taken inside Iran to start discussions for WTO membership, Alborzi added.
He also congratulated Lami, previously EU foreign trade commissioner, on his selection on September 1, as the new WTO head.
Iran's efforts to join the multilateral organization had been stymied 20 times by the United States in recent years.
In December the World Trade Organization agreed to begin accession talks with Iraq and Afghanistan, but the United States again blocked any such negotiations with Iran.
In a dramatic U-turn in April, the United States offered to allow Iran to start talks on joining the World Trade Organization (WTO).
