Berlin, Oct 4, IRNA-The head of the World Cup Organizing Committee Franz Beckenbauer said he was deeply touched by the warm welcome of Iranian football fans during his recent blitz visit to Tehran. "Everyone wanted to shake hands with me or touch me. It felt like being a popstar," Beckenbauer told the daily Bild on Tuesday.
"I did not dare my eyes as I walked by a newsstand in the Azadi Hotel: My face was on the front page of all (Iranian) newspapers ...," he added.
Beckenbauer led a delegation of the German World Cup Organizing Committee to Tehran on October 2, to personally invite the Iranian Football Federation.
The vice-president of the German Football Federation (DFB) will fly the equivalent of three times around the globe to visit the 31 national football associations which will join hosts Germany in the starting field for the 18th FIFA World Cup finals from June 9 to July 9, 2006.
The mammoth FIFA World Cup marathon is scheduled to continue until mid-February 2006.
