Mashhad, Khorasan prov, Oct 25, IRNA-Police commander in Khorasan province said in Mashhad on Monday that over two tons of drugs have been seized and two drug-trafficking gangs were also busted this week.
Colonel Ahmad Reza Radan told IRNA that the operations were the result of over three months of intensive work by the police.
After identifying the gangs over 1,796 kg of narcotics were seized, he added.
Of the figure, 1,630 kg were opium and 166 kg consisted of crystal, heroin and morphine.
In this connection over 29 smugglers were arrested and handed to judicial authorities.
Also in this week, 68.5 kg of illicit drugs were seized in 'Taybad' and 'Tourbat Heydarieh.'
He added that confronting bandits and small or large drug traffickers, is continuing in the province.
Despite its unceasing anti-drug efforts, Iran is still a key route for southwest Asian drugs on their way to lucrative markets in Europe and Persian Gulf countries.
Domestic narcotics consumption continues to be a persistent problem with at least two million drug addicts in the country.
Some 1.2 million people are addicted to narcotics in Iran while about 800,000 people use drugs occasionally.
