New York, Sept 8, IRNA-World parliaments speakers, in a statement issued in New York on Wednesday, denounced Washington move to deny visa to Iranian Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel.
The statement was read during the opening session of the Second World Conference of Speakers of Parliament at the United Nations New York headquarters by Paavo Lipponen, Parliament Speaker of Finland, who chaired the conference.
The world parliament speakers, in their statement, said the US move was an indication to its disrespect for the world parliaments.
The US act is against the UN resolutions upon which Washington must, as the host country, issue visa for all participants in the conference, it said.
The world speakers further expressed their solidarity with the Iranian Majlis speaker.
Haddad-Adel was due in New York on Wednesday but he called off his visit due to the delay in his visa delivery by the US officials.
No visa was received by Hadad-Adel by Tuesday afternoon while the US authorities were informed of his planned visit to New York two months earlier.
The Second World Conference of Speakers of Parliament was kicked off at the UN headquarters in New York Wednesday and will continue till September 9.
Broadening cooperation among world parliaments, strengthening multilateralism and promotion of peace, security, democracy, human rights and development are among objectives behind holding the conference.
Some 133 parliament speakers are to address the three-day confab.
