Renowned Iranian-American Scholar to Analyze Future of US-Iran Relations

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – September 14, 2005Bay Area Iranian-American Democrats (BAIAD) today announced it will be hosting a public educational event with Reza Aslan, renowned scholar and author of “No god but God”.  This event is titled “The Future of US-Iran Relations: How Can This Troubled Relationship Move Towards Peace?” and it will be held on Thursday, September 22 at the Hyatt San Jose, Woodside Conference Room, 1740 North First St., San Jose CA 95112, beginning at 7:30pm.

Reza Aslan

“Today, nearly 4 years after President Bush referred to Iran as part of an axis of evil, the relationship between the two countries remains as complex and challenging as ever,” said BAIAD President Mehrdad Moayedzadeh.  He added: “Such events as the invasion of Iraq, the record price of oil and the recent presidential elections in Iran have only added complexity to a relationship that has for decades been haunted by such memories as the 1953 US-backed coup against the democratically elected Prime Minister Mossadegh on one side, and the 1979 hostage taking at the US embassy in Tehran on the other.”

Mr. Aslan has received national -- and international -- recognition for his book “No god but God” and has appeared on numerous national programs including NPR, Meet The Press, Hardball with Chris Matthews, and “The Daily Show” and has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, New York Times and The Nation.  He has taught at the University of Iowa, and served as president of Harvard’s Chapter of the World Conference on Religion and Peace, a United Nations Organization committed to solving religious conflicts throughout the world.
