TEHRAN, Sept. 21 (Mehr News Agency) -- The "Statue of Peace" designed by Iranian artist Hossein Fakhimi was selected as the symbol of a music for peace festival to be held in Russia, the Persian service of ISNA reported on Wednesday. The statue depicts two white swans in order to advocate a spirit of peace.
Bands from 36 countries, including Iran, have been invited to give performances on the central theme of peace at the event, which is held annually in September.
Tadatoshi Akiba, the mayor of Hiroshima and the president of Mayors for Peace, has asked Iranian officials to make copies of the statue and distribute them throughout the world. Thirty-five countries have so far discussed the idea with the artist.
Fakhimi believes that the design of the statue is a clear example of love, peace, and friendship, that is, an intimate connection of hearts. His plaster sculpture of Omar Khayyam was installed at the University of Florence in Italy earlier this year.
Fakhimi was born in 1945 in Abhar, Zanjan Province. He received a Ph.D. in design from the Madrid Fine Arts (Completexia) University and also obtained a certificate for making medallions from the fine arts faculty of the university.
Fakhimi prepared the charter of the commission for installing sculptures and carrying out construction work at Iran's visual arts centers, helped establish the Iranian Sculptors Association in 1998, and designed the Museum of the Islamic Revolution of Iran.
