Iran: Alpine Ski Races Start in Dizin and Shemshak

Iran's ski resorts are the host of international ski leagues with the participation of 50 foreign skiers. It is the first time some women will come to Iran for these champions.

Tehran, 4 April 2006 (CHN) -- Men and women Alpine ski races started yesterday in Shemshak and Dizin ski resorts near Tehran. In addition to Iranians, 50 foreign skiers will also participate in this championship. What makes this round of alpine ski races in Iran distinguishable is that Iran has for the first time invited foreign women skiers to attend snow skiing championships. Last September Iran was the host of international grass ski races in which foreign women participated as well.

Within the first two days of the races which will be held in Shemshak international ski resort, skiers will compete in small spirals and then Dizin international ski resort will be the host of skiers for long, speed spiral ski races during 6-7 of April.

In addition to domestic skiers, some teams from Armenia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Pakistan will also attend these races. These international teams will stay in Shemshak hotel during the races.

"Since the Olympic Winter Games have just recently ended in Turin, this season of ski races in Iran has not been welcomed greatly by foreign teams," explained Nazar, an expert of Iran's Ski Federation adding that "Iran's Ski Federation will hold 3 international races this year."

Dizin and Shemshak are the first ski and winter sport resorts in Iran officially recognized by the International Ski Federations for their capability in administrating official and international competitions. These ski resorts are famous for the length of their ski course and length of their ski season which usually lasts for half a year from the end of November to the end of May. At present, there are 23 ski resorts in different parts of Iran among which 13 have been announced international ski resorts by Iran's Ski Federation. Iranian ski resorts enjoy the third highest quality among the Asian countries after China, South Korea, and Japan.
