In 100,000 strong London demonstration: "No peace in Middle East until threats to Syria and Iran are abandoned"

By Abbas Edalat (CASMII)

Up to 100, 000 people took part in the anti-war demonstration in London on Saturday August 5, 2006 demanding an immediate ceasefire in the US and UK supported war waged by Israel against Lebanon and the immediate withdrawal of the Israeli soldiers from Lebanon.

The marchers began in the Speakers Corner, passed the American Embassy and assembled in the end at Parliament Square in front of the House of Commons.  The turn out was unprecedented for an event which had been called only one week earlier.  See  the statement of Stop the War Coalition and also the BBC's report.

At the final rally, Tony Benn, the veteran Labour left leader and the President of the Stop the War Coalition made a moving speech in which he said:

“This is not a protest. This is a demand for a ceasefire now. ....and we say with the support of the overwhelming majority of the British people, we say with the support of  Kofi Annan, the General Secretary of the United Nations, we say with the support of the Archbishop of Canterbury that never ever believe that this is a religious war. This is not a religious war…There is no reason why Jews, Christians, Muslims and  Hindus cannot live and work in peace ….This is a war about oil and power.”

He then referred to the history of  British and American imperial interventions in the Middle East and asserted that Israel and the US are waging this war against Lebanon “in order to deal with Syria and Iran and establish American supremacy in the Middle East.  That is what this is all about. We have to be absolutely clear about this.”

“There will be no peace in the Middle East, no peace in the Middle East, until every Israeli soldier has left the Lebanon, until the Israelis have left the occupied territories, until the British and Americans have left Iraq and have left Afghanistan and abandoned their threat to Syria and to Iran….”

“There will be no peace until the Prime Minister gets out of Downing Street.”

The protest was supported by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), British Muslim Initiative, Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, Lebanese community organisations and hundreds of national and local organisations in the UK.

The Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention (CASMII) in Iran took part in the demonstration supporting the following demands:

-         Immediate and Unconditional Ceasefire

-    Hands off Lebanon

-    Freedom for Palestine

-    Don't Attack Syria

-    Don't Attack Iran

-   Immediate Negotiations with Iran without any Preconditions

CASMII marched with Action Iran a British based anti-war organisation.

Here you see CASMII’s photos which include those of  children’s shoes placed by the demonstrators outside Downing Street, symbolising the outrageous number of child casualties in Lebanon. Some of these also appear in photos in Baztab. See also Hossien Shahidi's photos.
