Project to build an industrial city in the vicinity of Bisotun can threaten the cultural landscape of this World Heritage Site.
Tehran, 9 August 2006 (CHN) -- Kermanshah's Industrial Cities Corporation is about to launch a project to construct an industrial town close to the village of Barzan Abad, which, according to experts, would intrude the cultural landscape of the World Heritage Site of Bisotun.
Kioumars Razeghi, expert and financial manager of Kermanshah's Industrial Cities Corporation believes that the new industrial town will be built outside the cultural boundaries of Bisotun. "The industrial town of Harsin will be constructed in a 90-hectare area at a distance three kilometers from the Bisotun historic complex," said Razeghi while cultural heritage experts have determined the cultural landscape of Bisotun to be 250 square kilometers and the new town will for sure fall inside the determined boundary.
The Company had previously claimed that it obtained permission from the province's Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department for building an industrial town in the vicinity of Bisotun; however, the Department rejected issuing of any permission for this project and says that it is not aware of such intentions at all.
"We have not received any requests for construction of an industrial city in the vicinity of Bisotun. Cultural landscape of this historic complex has been determined and announced to all governmental organizations, so I don't think any company would even start construction in this area," said Maliheh Mehdi Abadi, manager of Bisotun Grand Project. She also said that since the Barzan Abad village is located inside this boundary, any construction in or near this village must be approved by the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization first.
The historic site of Bisotun is located in Kermanshah province. The site was registered in the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites on July 13th, 2006 in a decision made by the World Heritage Committee in its 30th session which was held in Lithuania. The Complex is comprised of numerous valuable historical remains such as the Median Temple, Darius the Great's relief and frieze, gigantic statue of Hercules, and the Sassanid monument of Bisotun. It is considered one of the most unique historical sites of Iran. The most important features of the Bisotun complex are the Babylonian and Elamite cuneiforms and also Darius' inscription which marks the birth of the ancient Persian alphabet.
