Iraq emphasize expansion of ties with Iran

TEHRAN, Aug. 13 (Mehr News Agency) -- First Vice President Parviz Davudi and the Iraqi Oil Minister Hussein Shahristani held talks here on Sunday announcing the interest of Iran and Iraq in boosting bilateral ties.

"Iran prioritizes promotion of ties with neighboring states especially Iraq," Davudi told Shahristani.

The officials of the two countries should come up with new approaches to step up cooperation in all areas especially in economic and energy sectors, he added.

For his part, the Iraqi official said that one of Iraq's main policies is to further boost ties with Iran.

"We are ready to improve our cooperation especially in the field of energy and to welcome the Iranian investors in Iraq," Shahristani added. "We seek to use the Iranian experience in oil sector to develop Iraq."

The Iraqi government will not allow any group to act against the Islamic Republic of Iran and the activities of the terrorist Mujahideen Khalq Organization (MKO) has been banned in Iraq, he said.

MKO fled to Iraq during the Saddam government's war against Iran in the 1980s.

Turning to the Mideast crisis, Davudi described the UN resolution on Lebanon as a face-saving exit for Israel to escape the repeated defeats it suffered at the hands of Hezbollah freedom fighters.

"Hezbollah proved to the world that it is possible to stand against the bullies and win by maintaining unity and relying on God," the vice president stated.
