Bisotun Threatened by Kermanshah Polymer Company

Just after one month of its inscribing in the list of UNESCO's World Heritage sites, Bisotun is threatened by the activities of Kermanshah Polymer Company.

Tehran, 14 August 2006 (CHN) -- Just after one month of world registration of Bisotun historical site in list of UNESCO's World Heritage sites, by digging some wells in the vicinity of Bisotun inscription, the Kermanshah Polymer Company has broken all it promises to stop its developing projects and violated the cultural landscape of Bisotun historical site.

"Kermanshah's Petrochemical Company has never stopped its activity for world registration of Bisotun," said Sirus Samiei, programmer manager of Kermanshah Polymer Company to CHN.

While prior to this Taha Hashemi, director of Archeology Research Center, announced that the activities of this company has been stopped and it has no right to continue its projects in the vicinity of Bisotun plain, Samiei claims that only oral promises was made between this company and Iran's Cultural Heritage and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) for stopping the activities and the company has no written obligation in this respect.

"No formal letter has been received by this company for stopping its developing projects. We even have the written letter of the director of the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department of Kermanshah province indicating that the activities of Kermanshah Polymer Company is a national project and it should continue its work," added Samiei.

According to Samiei, more than two million US dollars has been spent so far for this project. "If the area is in the vicinity of Bisotun historical site, why ICHTO have not asked us to choose another place for construction of this factory two years ago? Who will be in charge of this large expense which has been spent so far for this project?" said Samiei.

Samiei explained that the company has translated the environment certificate of the project to receive the finance loan from a German bank. "We have even determined the location of the historical sites to the 30 kilometers distance from the project. This factory is the only project in west of Iran which its finance have been supplied. In addition, Petrochemical Company is a national project and will cause no problem to historical sites, and its activity will be stopped only by the order of the Ministry of Petroleum which is a governmental organization," added Samiei.

The historic site of Bisotun is located in Kermanshah province. The site was registered in the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites on July 13th, 2006 in a decision made by the World Heritage Committee in its 30th session which was held in Lithuania. The Complex is comprised of numerous valuable historical remains such as the Median Temple, Darius the Great's relief and frieze, gigantic statue of Hercules, and the Sassanid monument of Bisotun. It is considered one of the most unique historical sites of Iran. The most important features of the Bisotun complex are the Babylonian and Elamite cuneiforms and also Darius' inscription which marks the birth of the ancient Persian alphabet.
