Threat against Iran continues despite setback for Neoconservatives

Campaign Iran views the Republican defeat in the US elections and the consequent resignation of Donald Rumsfeld as a setback for the Neoconservatives and their 'War on Terror'. We welcome these developments as significant achievements for the global anti-war movement of which we are part.

While it still remains unclear as to whether any shift in foreign policy away from the Neoconservative strategy will occur, we believe any such shift would only come as a result of continued opposition - both abroad, where these wars of occupation have taken place, and at home in the US and UK where the anti-war movement has held these governments to account. As part of this movement, we believe we have made a contribution to averting a military attack on Iran thus far.

Nonetheless, we strongly oppose any complacency in light of such developments.

As yet, there are no clear indications of the US or UK withdrawing their presence in Iran's neighbouring countries, Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, recent reports have shown that US troop numbers in Iraq could even increase. Likewise, the White House has shown hostility towards a leaked secret report by the CIA, which finds no evidence for a nuclear weapons programme in Iran. Furthermore, Israeli leaders have persisted in their threats of attacking Iran, even after the outcome of the US elections.

Campaign Iran views the current situation as one of great danger and instability. We demand unconditional and direct negotiations between the US and Iran over the nuclear issue. We continue to strongly oppose sanctions which would do nothing other than produce detrimental consequences for the lives of ordinary Iranians, as the cases of Iraq and North Korea have shown. We believe any change in the Middle East must rest with the people of that region. The so-called democracy that is meant to be brought through force and intervention will only destroy the independent local movements for civil society and real democracy in the region.

Campaign Iran sees opposition to war and sanctions on Iran as vital a cause as ever. We urge both Iranians and non-Iranians to join us because only our united action can prevent another war and thus bring about a peaceful future.
