TEHRAN, Dec. 9 (Mehr News Agency) - First Iranian made drilling rig has set the country among the four major oilrig manufacturers in the world. Dubbed 'RIGD RIG', it is built by the young Iranian engineers relying on domestic know-how, managing director of Fajr Industrial Complex in Shiraz, southern Iran, said on Saturday.
"The rig went into operation for the first time last year and managed to drill as deep as 7,000 meters," Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Musavi continued, adding, "Production cost is 50% of similar one sold in international market at $2m."
Moreover, the access to or purchase of oilrigs was denied to Iran several times by countries like Holland. "Nevertheless, they are now ready to sell us the same commodity at discount prices," he elaborated.
Concurrently, Machine Sazi Arak (MSA), central Iran, announced that it had designed and developed its first oilrig ordered by National Iranian Oil Company at the cost of seven billion rials (roughly $750,000).
It is a saving over 65% compared to similar ones imported from Norway and Canada, MSA reported, setting the drilling power at 5,000 meters.
The rig is 54 meter tall at 230 tons. MSA is capable of building five per annum.
