TEHRAN, Dec. 10 (Mehr News Agency) - Overall, Iran's saffron is of the highest quality and the comments made by some European companies questioning the quality of Iran's saffron is baseless, noted on Sunday, chairman of Trade Promotion Organization of Iran (TPOI), Mehdi Ghazanfari.
Spain, Italy and Greece are planning to hold a joint session to create impediments in the way of Iran's saffron exports, however, given the significant role Iran plays as the world's first producer of the commodity, implementation of appropriate and timely measures as well as governmental supports would thwart the rival countries' attempts to that end, said the Iranian official referring to the recent moves by European saffron producers to limit Iran's exports of the product, he announced.
The increase in the prices of Iran's saffron has faced the European competitors with a difficult situation that is why they decided to hold the joint meeting to find a solution for their problem, stated the Iranian official who is also the nation's deputy commerce minister.
Coming second only to pistachio, saffron constitutes Iran's most important non-oil export; the nation ranks first in the world production of the condiment, with 80 percent of the world yield. Iran's annual saffron production is expected to hit 300 tons by the end of the nation's Fourth Five-Year Socioeconomic Development Plan in 2009.
