December 27, 2006 (RFE/RL ) -- More than 500 Iranian rights activists have issued a statement protesting what they describe as a government crackdown on universities, Radio Farda reported.
The activists say moves such as banning student activists from classes, purging competent university professors, pressuring independent student groups, and closing student publications are threatening the independence of universities.
The activists urged President Mahmud Ahmadinejad's government to review its behavior toward students.
